Na een lange reeks van instant klassiekers begon met Self Portrait (1970) de eerste echte kritiek op Bob Dylan te ontstaan. Muziekjournalist Greil Marcus schreef in zijn recensie voor dit dubbelalbum vol sobere covers en traditionals de befaamde regel ‘What is this shit?’. Zijn woorden hadden veel gewicht onder een bepaald publiek, maar de grote massa had er weinig boodschap aan; Self Portrait verkocht enorm goed. Later heeft Dylan toegegeven dat hij met het allegaartje zijn meest aanhankelijke fans van zich wilde vervreemden. Another Self Portrait, nummer tien in Dylans bootleg series, zoomt in op deze artistiek povere, maar erg interessante periode uit de loopbaan van de singer/songwriter. Met alle outtakes, live-opnames en onuitgebrachte nummers, ook afkomstig uit de sessies voor opvolger New Morning (eveneens uit 1970), is het een wirwar van liedjes. Lang niet alles rechtvaardigt de keuze van Dylan (of zijn platenmaatschappij) om dieper op Self Portrait in te gaan. Sommige nummers ontstijgen het niveau van noviteitje niet. Wel biedt deze uitgave veel context over het controversiële album. Greil Marcus heeft zelfs liner notes voor Another Self Portrait geschreven. Het kan verkeren. (JE)
