Na een retraite van bijna drie jaar ontpopte U2 zich met Achtung Baby (1991) tot een bijna nieuwe band. Het was de grootste sound- en stijlverandering sinds The Unforgettable Fire. Ontstaan vanuit een toestand van interne crisis en conflict was het niet alleen een reactie op de in de pers verguisde voorganger Rattle and Hum, maar ook een zoektocht naar een nieuw geluid: ‘het geluid van vier mannen die de Joshua Tree omhakten’, aldus Bono. En zo klinkt Achtung Baby als een eigentijdse deconstructie van U2 zelf, waarin pure rock ’n roll werd ingewisseld voor groezelige urban sounds (Zoostation en The Fly), en persoonlijke thema’s de sociaal-politieke issues vervingen (zoals One en Love is Blindness). Met ongeëvenaard succes bleek U2 ineens weer uiterst relevant te zijn en de band maakte met de nieuw ingeslagen weg een stevig statement: Achtung Baby! (JWvR)
