Voordat ze in 1967 definitief doorbrak als soulsensatie voor Atlantic, worstelde Aretha Franklin jarenlang met het vinden van de juiste vorm voor haar talent. Op deze drie cd’s horen we een selectie van het repertoire dat ze in de eerste helft van de jaren zestig onder leiding van verschillende producers opnam. Daarbij werd geput uit repertoire uit alle hoeken, van de ruwe country van Hank Williams (Cold, Cold Heart) tot de gedistingeerde songs van Burt Bacharach (Walk On By). Verhelderende liner notes ontbreken helaas bij deze interessante release. (MS)
